Has My No-Claims Bonus Expired?

No-claims history can lose its usefulness after a period without cover, but there is no single rule that every insurer applies in exactly the same way.

Find your latest proof and check the date your last policy ended. Some insurers accept older no-claims evidence than others, so the age of the proof can affect which providers will recognise it.

What no-claims bonus actually is

A no-claims bonus or discount is not a pot of money held in your name. It is a discount an insurer may apply because of claim-free history. The number of years shown on old documents can therefore be treated differently by a new provider.

Why a long break matters

Many insurers place a time limit on how old no-claims proof can be before they stop accepting it in the usual way. A driver returning after several years may therefore find that a previously substantial discount is reduced or not recognised at all.

Find the best evidence you have

Look for your last renewal notice, policy schedule, cancellation letter or a formal no-claims confirmation from the previous insurer. If you cannot find it, ask the old provider whether it can issue proof. The document should ideally show your name, the relevant dates and the amount of no-claims history.

Do not exaggerate the number of years

If a comparison form asks how many years of no-claims you can prove, enter the figure you can support. Some insurers cap the number of years they recognise, but that is different from you claiming more years than the documents show.

What if one insurer will not accept it?

Acceptance rules vary. One provider refusing old proof does not necessarily mean every provider will do the same. If your history is slightly outside a stated time limit, ask whether there is any discretion rather than altering the dates on an application.

If the old bonus cannot be used

You can still obtain quotes without claiming a no-claims discount if providers are willing to cover the risk, but the price may be different. Make sure the rest of the application is accurate and keep the old evidence because it may still be useful to another provider.
