Forgot to Declare a Car Modification

Changes to wheels, suspension, performance, bodywork or equipment may be relevant to an insurer.

If a modification was not disclosed, tell the insurer rather than assuming it is too minor to matter.

Start with the exact facts

Before applying elsewhere, gather the documents and dates that describe what happened. If an insurer has written to you, use its actual wording. Do not turn “not invited to renew” into “cancelled” or vice versa unless that is what the provider has said.

When a new insurer or comparison form asks a question, answer the question being asked. If you are unsure what a question means, it is safer to seek clarification than to choose the answer that seems most convenient.

Why accurate disclosure matters

Insurers use the information supplied at quotation and during the policy to decide whether they will offer cover and on what terms. Incorrect or incomplete answers can cause difficulties later, particularly when a claim is made.

Keep a record. Save emails, letters and screenshots that explain important changes. They can be useful if you later need to explain the history accurately.

What to do before getting another quote

Check your driving licence details, address, occupation, vehicle description, permitted use, claims, convictions and any modifications that may be relevant. Try not to make repeated applications using slightly different answers simply to see which produces a price.

If you disagree with an insurer

If you believe an insurer has acted on incorrect information or has treated you unfairly, use its complaints process first. The Financial Ombudsman Service can consider eligible complaints after the insurer has had the opportunity to respond.

Looking for cover again

Different providers have different underwriting rules, so one refusal does not necessarily mean that no provider will quote. The important point is to make the next application using accurate information.
