Why Can’t I Get Car Insurance? 20 Possible Reasons

If quotes have disappeared completely, the cause may be your driving history, the vehicle, the way it will be used or information entered on the application.

Start by checking facts rather than repeatedly changing answers. A lack of quotes can come from several separate underwriting issues, and the useful next step is to identify which one applies.

There is rarely one universal reason

Insurers do not all use the same underwriting rules. One provider may decline a risk that another is prepared to consider, and comparison sites only show providers whose criteria match the information supplied. If you suddenly receive no quotes, compare the details with your previous policy and renewal documents before assuming you are uninsurable.

Your policy history may matter

A previous cancellation, voided policy or refused renewal can change the way some providers view an application. The wording matters. A policy you cancelled yourself is different from one cancelled by the insurer, and a lapse for non-payment is not automatically the same as a policy being voided for incorrect information. Keep the letter or email explaining exactly what happened.

Claims, convictions and licence history

Recent claims, several claims close together, penalty points, a driving ban or a conviction can reduce the number of insurers willing to quote. That does not mean cover is impossible. It does mean dates, conviction codes, claim circumstances and licence information need to be accurate because insurers may treat different histories very differently.

The car itself can be the problem

Imported cars, grey imports, left-hand-drive vehicles, unusual models, high-value cars and modified vehicles may fall outside ordinary underwriting rules. A vehicle that is not recognised by an online form can also stop a quotation before price is even considered. Have the registration, exact model, engine details and any modification information ready.

Address, occupation and use can change the result

Where the vehicle is kept, your occupation, annual mileage, commuting and business use all affect underwriting. If you have moved house, changed job or started using the car for work, the information may now produce a different result from last year. Give the accurate position rather than experimenting with alternative descriptions.

A practical way forward

Work through the possible causes one by one: previous policy history, claims and convictions, vehicle details, address, occupation, licence, mileage, modifications and intended use. If a comparison form cannot deal with an unusual circumstance, a provider may need more information. Once you know the likely obstacle, use the specific guides on this site to understand what to check before applying again.
