Car Insurance After a Fault Claim

A fault claim can affect price and the range of quotes available, but it does not automatically mean you will be unable to obtain cover.

Have the claim date, circumstances, cost if known and no-claims position ready. Future insurers may ask about accidents and claims even if the incident has already been settled.

What a fault claim means

In insurance terms, a claim can be recorded as fault where the insurer could not recover its costs from another party, even if you do not feel morally responsible for the accident. Use the description shown by your insurer rather than assuming the everyday meaning of blame is the same.

Why future quotes may change

Claims history is one of the factors insurers use when assessing risk. A recent fault claim can affect premium and acceptance, particularly when combined with other claims, convictions or a higher-risk vehicle. Providers do not all react in the same way.

Check the no-claims position

A fault claim may reduce your no-claims discount unless it was protected or the policy terms provide otherwise. Protection usually protects the discount itself, not the overall premium. Your price can still rise after an accident even if the number of protected years remains.

Keep accurate claim details

Record the date, type of incident, whether anybody else was involved and the final status if known. If a quotation form asks for the cost and you do not know it, follow the provider’s instructions rather than guessing. Your previous insurer may be able to confirm the record.

One claim and several claims are different situations

A single incident may still leave many options available. Several claims in a short period can be treated more cautiously. If you have multiple incidents, make sure every one is disclosed where required rather than only the most recent.

Applying for cover again

Do not omit the accident because it was minor or because you paid some damage yourself. Applications often ask about accidents as well as claims. Read the time period in the question and answer it exactly. Accurate history gives the next provider the best chance to assess the risk properly.
