Ask whether the insurer is simply not inviting renewal or whether it has cancelled or voided the policy. Those are different histories and should not be confused on future applications.
Start with the exact renewal wording
A normal decision not to offer another annual policy is not necessarily the same as cancelling the current policy. Read the renewal letter carefully. If the wording is unclear, ask the insurer to confirm in writing what has happened and whether the current cover remains valid until its stated end date.
Why a claim can alter underwriting
The insurer may reconsider the risk after receiving new claims information. The type of accident, cost, frequency of previous claims and wider profile can all matter. Some insurers may remain willing to cover you but at a different price; others may fall outside their own underwriting limits.
Prepare the claim information
Have the date, circumstances, status and cost if known. Check whether the claim is recorded as fault, non-fault or still open. An open claim can sometimes make quoting less straightforward because the final cost or responsibility has not yet been settled.
Check other changes at the same time
Renewal problems are not always caused by the claim alone. A new address, occupation, modification, conviction or different vehicle can also change the result. Compare the current policy details with the new information before assuming one event explains everything.
If you believe the insurer is wrong
If the refusal is based on an incorrect claim record or information you dispute, raise it with the insurer. Ask what data it is relying on and provide evidence where appropriate. Use the formal complaints process if the issue cannot be corrected informally.
Looking for another provider
Answer questions about previous refusal, cancellation or renewal exactly as they are written. If you were simply not invited to renew, do not automatically describe that as policy cancellation. Different insurers have different rules, so a refused renewal from one provider does not prove that no other provider will quote.
